Rey Hernández and His Sweet Art

We want to tell you about the skills and creativity of Rey Hernandez, he is an example of hard work, creativity and success. Rey is really passionate about quality and innovation through his edible fruit designs and his balloon and flower arrangements to celebrate all those happy occasions in our lives.

Rey had an idea and he didn’t listen to those who said he was “crazy and would fail,” he didn’t give up, “it was an idea I had one crazy day. I love to watch everything art-related on TV and that’s how I thought about it. I had previously made flower arrangements for family parties, but when I started to do it as a business was a day I was watching YouTube videos and I said to myself ‘that’s a good idea.’ That’s where I learned, on YouTube, online… art classes would have been so expensive and I didn’t think I could afford them. I said to myself ‘I got initiative and I can do it.”

Salt Lake City, UT. August 2013

Rey moved from Hidalgo, Mexico looking for a better life, “all my life I’ve been very interested on making money, I’m very ambitious but in a good way, it’s not about making money no matter what it takes, but earn it in a good way…”

First he moved to Texas with his family, then to Florida because he loves to be in new places and get to know other cultures. He moved to Salt Lake City in February, and by May he was already working on 33 fruit arrangements for Mother’s Day. Each watermelon takes between 2 to 4 hours, “I’d wake up to work on them, drink some coffee, sleep two or three hours and wake up again to keep working on them.”

Mickey and Minnie are the designs that most people request, but he also carves castles, cowboy themes, weddings, graduations, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, cartoon characters, peacocks… just tell him what you want and an he’ll work on it.

“Everyone thinks I’m great at drawing with pencil and paper, but I’m so bad at it! What happens is that working on watermelon let’s you do it little by little, until you get the form right, without stencils… you gotta be very patient, if you get frustrated, if you carve it too hard or too quickly the knife breaks or you mess up the design, and you have to start over. What I like the most is the smile I see on people’s faces when they receive their arrangement. That is so rewarding. My designs are unique, I never repeat one.”

Rey Hernández is one of our artists, an inspiration to be motivated and take initiative. It is possible to have an idea, work on it, and reach your goals.
